OCTG Pipe Production Process

What is OCTG pipe?

OCTG pipe, or Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG), is an essential building block in the oil and natural gas extraction process and plays a central role in the entire oil industry chain. From drilling wells thousands of meters underground to laying long-distance transcontinental pipelines, OCTG pipes are crucial for ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of oil.

There are four main categories: Oil pipes are mainly used for oil and gas production, water injection and acid fracturing in oil wells, directly contacting the oil layer and transporting oil and natural gas from underground to the surface; Casing pipe is an important pipe that is inserted into the drilled wellbore from the ground. It acts as a lining to prevent the wellbore from collapsing and provides a stable wellbore environment for mining operations.

The drill pipe is a key tool in oil drilling, used to transmit torque and weight on bit to drive the drill bit to rotate and drill into the formation. Line pipes are used to transport oil and natural gas, connecting oil fields, refineries, chemical plants and end users, and are an important link in the oil industry chain.

Key steps in the production process

1. Raw material selection
OCTG pipe is made of high-quality steel, which must be selected according to the operating environment. For highly corrosive oil and gas fields with high sulfur and acid content, alloy steel containing chromium and molybdenum is used for corrosion protection. For high-pressure and high-temperature environments, steel with a moderate carbon content and the addition of micro-alloying elements such as vanadium and niobium is selected to refine the grain size to improve strength and toughness to meet stringent requirements.

2. Forming processing
There are two types of forming processes: seamless pipes require heating the billet, perforating it into a hollow shell, and then rolling it to reduce the wall thickness and set the diameter to meet the size and surface requirements; welded pipes are rolled from steel plates and welded to the joints by resistance welding or submerged arc welding to ensure that the welds meet the standards.

3. Heat treatment
Heat treatment is crucial to the performance of OCTG pipe and includes quenching and tempering. Quenching involves heating to a high temperature followed by rapid cooling, which imparts a martensitic structure to the pipe, increasing its hardness and strength. Tempering involves heating to a low temperature and cooling to eliminate internal stresses, adjust the hardness-toughness balance, and improve mechanical properties to meet application requirements.

4. Surface treatment
OCTG pipe surface treatment focuses on corrosion and rust prevention to extend its service life: first, coating with epoxy resin, polyethylene and other coatings to prevent corrosion; second, galvanizing and nickel plating to enhance rust resistance, ensuring long-term stability in harsh environments and complex working conditions.

Technical points of production process

1. High-precision processing technology
OCTG pipe production is carried out with high-precision processing: the inner diameter deviation of perforation is controlled to ±0.5mm, and the roundness error of rolling pipe is ≤0.5% of the diameter, ensuring accuracy and stability underground.

2. Welding technology
Pipe welding is the core of quality: resistance welding controls current and voltage to promote metal fusion, inert gas shielding reduces impurities and ensures weld sealing and strength.

3. Quality inspection technology
Quality inspections ensure OCTG pipe quality: Ultrasonic testing detects internal defects (minimum 0.5mm), and magnetic particle testing reveals surface defects, improving inspection reliability.

Process advantages and application prospects

Technology is driving the development of OCTG pipe technology, enabling it to possess high strength and corrosion resistance, making it suitable for use in oilfields in the Middle East desert. With growing global energy demand, market demand for OCTG pipe is increasing, and its application holds great promise in deep-sea development and the renovation of aged oilfields.
