1.ASTM A515 Steel Plate
ASTM A515 :Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Carbon Steel, for Intermediate- and Higher-Temperature Service. This specification covers carbon-silicon steel plates primarily for intermediate- and higher-temperature service in welded boilers and other pressure vessels. Steel plates are available in three grades having different strength levels: Grade 60; Grade 65; and Grade 70. The steel shall be killed and made to a coarse austenitic grain size practice. The steel shall conform to the chemical requirements specified. Tension test shall be made to conform to the requirements specified.
2.ASTM A516 Steel Plate
ASTM A516:Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Carbon Steel, for Moderate- and Lower-Temperature Service. This specification covers carbon steel plates intended primarily for service in welded pressure vessels where improved notch toughness is important. According to different strength levels, the plates are available in four grades: Grades 55, 60, 65, and 70. The maximum thickness of plates is limited only by the capacity of the composition to meet the specified mechanical property requirements.
3.ASTM A515 vs A516 Steel Plate
Feature | ASTM A515 | ASTM A516 |
---|---|---|
Standard Name | Carbon steel plates for intermediate and higher temperature pressure vessels | Carbon steel plates for intermediate and lower temperature pressure vessels |
Chemical Composition | Carbon, manganese, silicon, with trace amounts of phosphorus and sulfur | Carbon, manganese, silicon, with trace amounts of phosphorus and sulfur, some grades contain molybdenum |
Mechanical Properties | High yield and tensile strength | High yield and tensile strength, some grades have even higher strength |
Heat Treatment Condition | Typically normalized or normalized and tempered | Typically quenched and tempered |
Application Fields | Primarily used for manufacturing pressure vessels, boilers, etc. | Primarily used for manufacturing pressure vessels, boilers, etc., also suitable for more severe environments |
Weldability | Good | Good, some grades have better weldability |
Corrosion Resistance | Average | Better, some grades have additional corrosion resistance |
The most fundamental difference between ASTM A515 and A516 steel plates lies in their design purposes and performance requirements. A515 is primarily used for the manufacture of intermediate-temperature pressure vessels, while A516 is used for the manufacture of low to intermediate-temperature pressure vessels.
