Damage to steel pipes during shipping

Steel pipes (seamless pipes, welded steel tubes, etc.) can be divided into three types of damage during shipping: rust damage, physical damage, and corrosion

1. Rust damage
Rust damage is the main form of cargo damage to steel pipes during sea transportation. This is due to the nature of the steel pipe itself and the long sea transportation time. The worst manifestation of steel pipe rust damage is that the corrosion develops to the extent that serious rust packs appear on the surface of the steel pipe. When the goods are delivered to the consignee, the use of the goods themselves has been lost, resulting in huge economic and reputation losses for the carrier.

The reasons for the rust damage of steel pipes during sea transportation can be summarized as follows.
(1) Load wet cargo
(2) Hatch cover leaks
(3) Failure to properly ventilate
(4) The sewage from the sewage well is not discharged in time

2. Physical damage
The main manifestations of physical damage are: bending, depression, deformation and winding of corners. Behavior during loading, unloading and handling and movement of cargo during voyages are the main sources of physical damage to steel pipes during transportation.

Main causes of physical damage:
(1) Improper work
(2) Cargo movement

3. Corroded
The main reason is that steel pipes were corroded during transportation due to improper cargo hold. The cargo hold should be cleaned and dried, but it is generally considered that the cleaning requirements of the cargo hold are not very high for loading steel pipes. In this way, some cargo from previous voyages (especially fertilizers, phosphates, coke, soda ash, soda ash, soda ash, anhydrous sodium carbonate, etc.) may remain in the cargo hold. Once these residual cargoes come into contact with steel, they can cause corrosion damage to it.

Before transporting the steel pipes, the tank also needs to be thoroughly washed, especially the residual cargo under the deck beams, inside the hatch cover frame, inside the ribs in the cabin and pipe racks must be thoroughly cleaned. In order to prevent the residual cargo at these components from falling on the surface of the steel pipe due to vibration, shaking and other reasons during the voyage, causing corrosion to it.
