Sheet pile shoring

What is sheet pile shoring?
Steel sheet pile shoring is a construction method of foundation engineering. It uses steel sheet piles to drill into the soil along the ground or underground to a certain depth to form a basic shoring system to achieve reinforcement and strengthening of the soil. It is often used to shoring the excavation of deeper pits. The main reason for using steel sheet pile shoring is that steel sheet piles have the characteristics of high strength, good rigidity, and long service life. During the construction process, they can effectively resist the influence of natural forces such as groundwater, soil lateral pressure, and faults. In addition, because the installation method of steel sheet piles is relatively flexible, different combinations and arrangements can be made according to specific conditions to form a shoring system that adapts to different engineering needs. In the actual construction process, steel sheet pile shoring usually needs to be used in conjunction with other shoring projects, such as underground continuous walls, steel pipe piles, soil nails, etc., to achieve a more comprehensive and reliable shoring effect.

What is the most common type of shoring?
1. Cantilever type
The cantilevered steel sheet pile shoring form has no shorings or anchors, and relies entirely on the depth of the Larson steel sheet piles to maintain the stability of the retaining wall. Under this shoring form, the soil outside the Larson steel sheet piles is prone to deformation, and the excavation of the foundation pit is difficult. In temporary projects with a small depth, there are no buildings next to the foundation pit, and there are no underground pipelines and other structures on both sides that need to be protected, so it can be considered.

2. Support type
Braced steel sheet pile support is a shoring form with steel shorings on the inside of the Larson steel sheet pile wall. This shoring method has strong stability and high safety, and is a commonly used shoring form in engineering construction.

3. Pull anchor type
Anchor-type steel sheet pile shoring means that after the Larson steel sheet piles are installed, the steel sheet pile retaining wall is connected to the anchor piles outside the foundation pit through steel wire ropes or anchor cables, and the Larson steel plate is stabilized through reverse tension. Pile retaining wall, the advantage of this form of shoring is that it can reduce the difficulties caused by internal shoring to project construction, and it is also more economical.

What is the difference between shoring and sheet piles?
In underground construction, steel sheet piles and steel sheet pile shoring are two common engineering methods. The differences between these two methods will be introduced below.

1. Different definitions
(1) Driving steel sheet piles
Steel sheet piles are steel sheet piles that are driven into soil or rocks and are used in situations where strong shoring is required such as reinforcement, leveling or water storage. It is usually driven by excavation machinery or professional pile drivers through motor output to sink into the ground. Steel sheet piling is a foundation engineering system suitable for situations where it is necessary to maintain a level and stable surface and provide a certain amount of lateral shoring.

(2)Steel sheet pile shoring
Steel sheet pile shoring is a geological engineering structure with a shoringing structure. It is often used in civil engineering projects. It is usually used in underground tunnels, bridges, settlement foundations and other projects to shoring soil and protect underground projects. Steel sheet pile shoring is a temporary shoring measure suitable for situations where the geological environment needs to be controlled and managed during the project to ensure construction safety.

2. Different construction methods
  (1) Driving steel sheet piles
Steel sheet piles are usually constructed using professional pile drivers. It requires first placing the steel sheet pile horizontally at the installation location and using a pile driver to slowly push it into the soil or rock to ensure stability and solidity.

(2)Steel sheet pile shoring
Steel sheet pile shoring usually requires the use of more auxiliary equipment and accessories. During installation, the actual pile shoring is made up of the pile itself and the surrounding soil or rock. Sheet piles are usually installed along the long axis of the tunnel and reinforced with brackets.
