What are the ASTM specifications for steel H-beams?

ASTM International is a global organization that provides standardized guidelines for steel manufacturers. ASTM International publishes information on the classification, uation, and specification of steel types, which steel manufacturers use to determine the materials, mechanical properties, chemical properties, and metallurgical properties of their steels.

ASTM is the standard used in the United States to determine the steel grades of steel H-beams and steel wide flange beams.

H-beams

Steel H-beams are a common steel structural material with an H-shaped cross-section and excellent mechanical properties and processing properties. Due to its special shape and use, H-beams are widely used in various buildings, bridges, machinery, and other fields.

ASTM Standards for Steel H Beams:

Steel H-beams and steel wide flange beams meet eight ASTM standards, including A36, A572-50 grade, A588, A690, A709, A913-50 grade, A913-65 grade, and A992.

ASTM A36 is mainly applicable to carbon structural steel. It covers structural quality shapes for bolted, welded or riveted construction of bridges and buildings.

ASTM A572 Grade 50 For higher strength, low alloy columbium vanadium structural steels. This specification covers Grade 50 for welded, bolted and riveted building construction.

ASTM A588 For higher strength, low alloy structural steels. This specification covers atmospheric corrosion resistance and weight reduction.

ASTM A690 For test and material standards for structural quality high strength low alloy phosphorus steel H-piles and sheet piles. This specification is used in the construction of bulkheads, excavations and block walls.

ASTM A709 For rebar and shapes for bridge construction. For carbon and high strength low alloy shapes.

ASTM A913 Grade 50 For higher strength, lower structural quality alloy steel shapes. This specification covers Grade 50 structural steel shapes produced by QSI. These shapes are suitable for bolted, riveted and welded construction of buildings, bridges and other structures.

ASTM A913 Grade 65 is the same as ASTM A913 Grade 50, but it is a different grade. Its structural steel is Grade 65.

ASTM A992 specification applies to steel structural shapes in building frames. It covers rolled shapes for building frames, bridges, and general structural projects.
